Delaware House Passes Bill to Legalize Recreational Marijuana Use

On July 9th, 2019, the Delaware House of Representatives passed a bill to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. This historic move makes Delaware the 11th state in the United States to legalize recreational marijuana use, and the first state to do so through the legislative process.

The bill, which passed by a vote of 23-16, will allow adults over the age of 21 to possess up to one ounce of marijuana for personal use. It also creates a regulatory framework for the sale and taxation of marijuana, allowing for the establishment of retail stores and cultivation facilities. The bill also includes provisions for expungement of past marijuana convictions and the reinvestment of tax revenue into communities disproportionately affected by the war on drugs.

The passage of this bill is a major victory for marijuana advocates in Delaware and across the country. It is a sign that attitudes towards marijuana are changing, and that more states are recognizing the potential benefits of legalizing recreational marijuana use.

The bill still needs to be signed by Governor John Carney before it can become law. However, Governor Carney has indicated that he will sign the bill, citing the potential economic and social benefits of legalization.

The passage of this bill is an important step forward in the effort to end prohibition and create a more equitable and just system for marijuana regulation. It is also a sign that more states are recognizing the potential benefits of legalizing recreational marijuana use, and that attitudes towards marijuana are changing.
