Delaware House Passes Bill to Legalize Recreational Marijuana

On June 30th, 2020, Delaware made history by becoming the first state in the mid-Atlantic region to legalize recreational marijuana use. The Delaware House of Representatives passed a bill that will allow adults 21 and over to possess and use marijuana for recreational purposes. This bill is expected to be signed into law by Governor John Carney in the near future.

The bill will allow adults to possess up to one ounce of marijuana and up to six marijuana plants for personal use. It also creates a system of licensed dispensaries where adults can purchase marijuana products. The bill also includes provisions for the regulation of marijuana products, including labeling, testing, and packaging requirements.

The passage of this bill is a major victory for marijuana advocates in Delaware, who have long argued that legalizing recreational marijuana would bring numerous benefits to the state. These include increased tax revenue, job creation, and improved public health outcomes. Additionally, the legalization of recreational marijuana is expected to reduce the burden on the criminal justice system, as it will no longer be necessary to prosecute individuals for possessing small amounts of marijuana.

The passage of this bill is also seen as a major step forward for marijuana reform in the United States. While many states have legalized medical marijuana, Delaware is the first state in the mid-Atlantic region to legalize recreational marijuana use. This could set a precedent for other states in the region to follow suit and legalize recreational marijuana use as well.

It remains to be seen how the legalization of recreational marijuana in Delaware will affect the state in the long run. However, it is clear that this is a major victory for marijuana advocates and a major step forward for marijuana reform in the United States.
