Lakers Acquire Dennis Schroder

Date:

With the NBA season rapidly approaching, the Los Angeles Lakers acquired Dennis Schroder. Here are the details, as well as a preview of Schroder on the Lakers.

Deal Summary

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed 29-year-old point guard Dennis Schroder to a one-year, veteran minimum contract. With this deal, Schroder makes $2.64 million next year.

Schroder played for the Boston Celtics and the Houston Rockets last season, notching 13.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game on the season. He scored an average of 3.5 more points per game when he played shooting guard for Boston than when he played point guard for Houston. Given this, it seems that Schroder may play shooting guard for the Lakers this year.

Schroder played for the Lakers back in the 2020-2021 NBA season, starting at shooting guard in each of the 61 games he played in. On the Lakers, he was given an average of 32.1 minutes per game, the highest play time he’s received in his career. With the Lakers, he averaged 15.4 points per game, 3.5 rebounds per game, and 5.8 assists per game.

Lakers Squad

On the Lakers, Schroder adds to a talented backcourt including Russell Westbrook, Patrick Beverley, Austin Reaves, and Kendrick Nunn. Between these four guards and Schroder, playing time could be tight. Luckily, Schroder has had experience in both the point guard and shooting guard positions, and can be flexible. For Schroder, the key this season will be making the most of what play time he gets.

Since Schroder was on the Lakers during the 2020-2021 NBA season, he’s familiar with the team and has good chemistry with many Lakers players. LeBron James and Anthony Davis are among players that have teamed up with Schroder before.

Newly signed head coach Darvin Ham has actually coached Schroder before. They spent the first five years of Schroder’s career together on the Atlanta Hawks. In Schroder’s last season in Atlanta, he averaged a career high 19.4 points per game.

Final Thoughts

While the Lakers already have a strong backcourt, Schroder provides reliable bench scoring, and may even start if he can prove himself. He brings back a familiar face to the Lakers and has had experience with newly hired head coach Darvin Ham. Overall, it looks like Schroder will be a great addition to the Lakers and elevate the level of their game.
