The sculpture studio with a high-brightness LG display

Over the course of 10 years, renowned sculptor Barry X Ball has designed, built and outfitted one of the most technologically advanced art production facilities in New York City.

Stationed in an expansive ground-level Brooklyn studio, Ball and his staff use modern tools and techniques including digital modeling, 3D scanning and 3D printing to create detailed sculptures that each require up to 10,000 hours of handwork to complete.

After recognising that many passersby try to sneak a peek in the windows to see what was inside the building, Ball chose to connect with the local community more directly by installing a 49-inch high-brightness LG outdoor digital display (model 49XE4F) on the building’s facade to exhibit the studio’s work and processes to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week, even in direct sunlight.

“I have a mix of still images and videos of my sculptures and their fabrication processes playing every minute of every day on the exterior display,” Ball explained, “resulting in significant increases in positive comments and questions from the busy cacophony of residents, visitors and local professionals who frequent Williamsburg / Greenpoint for jobs and activities related to creative design, art, film, photography and fashion. It’s wonderful to share my work and the work of my team with the local community in a more direct way, and it adds to the experience of visiting here without expressly advertising my name or sales – the art itself is the point.”

Ball looked to LG to provide an art-worthy display solution that excels at presenting detailed, high brightness images in sunlit conditions without glare, which the 4,000-nit display, and its anti-reflection coating, handle with ease. The final result is an attractive, meaningful addition to the artistic neighborhood and community.
