Abbott’s MitraClip™ Device Demonstrates Long-Term Benefits in Landmark COAPT™ Trial Results

In a landmark clinical trial, Abbott’s MitraClip™ device has demonstrated long-term benefits for patients with severe mitral regurgitation (MR). The results of the COAPT™ trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that patients who received the MitraClip™ device had significantly improved symptoms and quality of life compared to those who received medical therapy alone.

The MitraClip™ device is a minimally invasive treatment option for patients with severe MR. It is designed to reduce the amount of blood that flows backward through the mitral valve, which can cause symptoms such as shortness of breath and fatigue. The device is inserted through a catheter and clipped onto the leaflets of the mitral valve, allowing it to close more effectively and reduce the amount of regurgitation.

The COAPT™ trial was a randomized, controlled study that included more than 1,000 patients with severe MR. Patients were randomly assigned to either receive the MitraClip™ device or medical therapy alone. After two years, the results showed that those who received the MitraClip™ device had significantly improved symptoms and quality of life compared to those who received medical therapy alone.

In addition to these short-term benefits, the trial also showed that the benefits of the MitraClip™ device were sustained over time. After four years, the patients who received the MitraClip™ device still had significantly improved symptoms and quality of life compared to those who received medical therapy alone.

The results of the COAPT™ trial demonstrate the long-term benefits of Abbott’s MitraClip™ device for patients with severe MR. The device is a safe and effective treatment option that can improve symptoms and quality of life in these patients. It is an important advancement in the treatment of MR and will likely become a standard of care for many patients with this condition.
